Research the company

Before stepping into the interview room, immerse yourself in the company’s world. Research their mission, values, recent news, and ongoing projects. This allows you to tailor your questions to their specific goals.

For instance, if the company is known for its innovation in sustainability, you could ask, “What are some upcoming initiatives focused on achieving the company’s environmental goals? How can someone in this role contribute?”

This demonstrates you’ve put in the effort to understand their priorities and how you can be a part of the solution.

Align with the role

Dig into the job description and identify key skills or areas of focus. Craft questions that explore these aspects in more detail. This shows the interviewer you’ve not just skimmed the job posting, but truly understand what the role entails.

Let’s say you’re interviewing for a marketing position that emphasizes data analysis. A good question could be, “What metrics are most important for measuring the success of marketing campaigns in this role? How can someone in this position leverage data to optimize campaign performance?”

Show interest in the interviewer

Beyond the specifics of the role, express interest in the interviewer themself and the company culture. Ask open-ended questions that spark conversation and reveal insights beyond the brochure.

For example, instead of a generic “What is the company culture like?”, consider, “What are some of the company traditions or team-building activities that foster a strong company culture here?”

This personalized approach shows you’re interested in the work environment and the people you might be working with.

Avoid inappropriate or irrelevant questions

Avoid questions readily available on the company website or easily found through a quick Google search. Steer clear of anything salary-related at the initial interview stage.

Follow up with gratitude and enthusiasm

After the interview, send a thank-you email reiterating your interest and enthusiasm for the opportunity. Briefly mention something specific discussed that resonated with you. This keeps you fresh in the interviewer’s mind.

If you can find out who your interviewer is beforehand, do a quick LinkedIn search to understand their area of expertise. Ask a question that taps into their knowledge and demonstrates your interest in their experience.
